Lieberman and Negative Campaigning


“Not only did Lieberman go negative this time -- he went negative first. And he did it in a way that forever changed Connecticut politics.
He aired a commercial poking brutal fun at Weicker to portray him as fat, lazy and corrupt: He portrayed Weicker as a cartoon bear who slept through crucial votes, emerging only to make money at speaking engagements.

Lieberman does feel a need to address this tactic in his new book. After all, the book is a call for elevating politics above mean-spirited partisanship. He claims that the ads were strictly issue-oriented and accurate: Weicker did miss lots of votes. He did accept speaking fees.”
